A thought on content
During the DCI I was struck by how traditional media houses don't seem to really be able to get their minds around the concept of blogging, and how blogs relate to what they do. Mohammed from Al Jazeera really had some rad points, and his organisation is integrating very tightly with different mediums, and using social networks to their maximum potential, using technology like youtube, etc.
It is going to be a long time before our local companies get to grips with using streaming video, let alone archiving their shows etc. on their website, or youtube. Considering SABC websites are dismally bad, present no evidence that they even understand that people use the internet, and what potential a website can have in connecting with the viewers (I pick on SABC because they are a public enterprise, and so they should actually have a strong mandate for opening the channels with the viewers).
After all that rambling I present my very personal impression of what I call the content continuum. This graphic only discusses quality, there could be similar ones discussing length, breadth, etc. which would all be different from this one. It is my personal opinion, and it has no grounding in anything but my personal experience and belief. I have tried to depict a weighted distribution, i.e. most journalism sits at the high end of the scale, but it is distributed across a wide area. I have used the term Quality, but maybe it is not quite right, I would appreciate input?
