Journalism lecturers at Rhodes University are finding ways to use social media such as Facebook and Twitter in their teaching.
Radio lecturer Danika Marquis said students use social to research trends in popular culture, and to advertise their work, including personal bogs and radio journalism or podcasts.

"It is a good way of attracting traffic to student work," Marquis said.
Young peopple in particular use social media such as Facokk to talk to each other and share photographs and other information, said design lecturer Brian Garman. Social media sites are often also the first port of call for breaking news.
Economics journalism lecturer Robert Brand said working journalists use sites such as Twitter to share information and to pick up news tips and story leads.

"Journalism lecturers should think creatively about tapping into this resource to improve their teaching," he said.
While it may not be possible to use social media in teahcing in all specialisations and courses, teachers should be aware of the possibilitiers of the medium.
