Every lecturer at Rhodes’ School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) subscribes to the vision statement. But everyone also has his or her individual interpretation.
No matter – the diversity is something to value. Yet it can cause difficulties when a discussion takes place with different folk meaning different things – but using the same words.
Questioning convergence
Submitted by staff on Tue, 06/02/2009 - 07:45.Larry Strelitz recently spoke to Reg Rumney, Head of the Centre for Economics Journalism in Africa at Rhodes University, about current trends in media convergence. They explored what is meant by the term ‘convergence’ as well as the underlying cultural, technological and economic drivers of the process. Rumney provided examples of the process in practice and also raised concerns that the need to train future journalists in the varied technologies of production may be diverting attention away from the importance of actual content.
Organising African j-schools
Submitted by Guy Berger on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 10:06.MARCH 2008: Almost two dozen African j-schools, recognised by UNESCO has having potential to become "Centres of Excellence" met in Grahamstown to share ideas and network with possible international j-school partners plus media-development agencies and funders.
