Big Brother is watching you!

After reading the novel 1984 by George Orwell , it is hard to imagine a world where surveillance could become such a reality. Well it’s real and Google Maps has shown us that they can track your every move and if you don’t trust me take a look here.

Awarenet - are you aware yet?

Are you aware of the innovative educational software - Awarenet? At the Xinnovations conference in 2012, Ronald Wertlen, trustee of the Village Scribe Association described the software in one phrase, the "Web 2.0 for all".

Awarenet is a social networking software that has been specifically designed for schools with the purpose of creating and sharing educational resources. The software was first designed with rural schools in mind, especially those many rural schools that have computer labs, but do not use them.

Social media, journalism and journalism education

Journalism lecturers at Rhodes University are finding ways to use social media such as Facebook and Twitter in their teaching.
Radio lecturer Danika Marquis said students use social to research trends in popular culture, and to advertise their work, including personal bogs and radio journalism or podcasts.

"It is a good way of attracting traffic to student work," Marquis said.

Grocott’s Mail finds new nuance in a "conventional" sob-story

13012009282.jpg

A sadly predictable series of events:

(a) tornado devastates homes;

(b) state delivers aid in the form of iron kits for temporary houses;

(c) four months later, the victims remain without homes because the structures have not been assembled.

In this sketch of the facts, are basic narratives that are all too familiar to South African readers:

- Disasters strike. Shit happens. Nature is to blame. (Of course, if the people affected had decent homes, rather than shacks, they wouldn’t have lost their shelter in the first place).

We won a Knight Challenge grant!

gk.JPG
And here's the glass-inscribed tablet to prove it!

Rhodes Journ is one of 16 winners of the 2008 Knight newschallenge - out of 3000 entrants into this international competition.

Over 4 years, the foundation will allocate $630 400 (R4,8m) to the school for a project working with mobile journalism.

In a nutshell, the idea is to involve students, the Grocott's Mail, and learners (as citizen journalists) to develop a common communications space in divided Grahamstown, by integrating them through cellphone journalism.
